Found in the South of France, this Early 20th Century French Trestle Refectory Monastery Dining Table was handcrafted from walnut in the early 1900’s. The piece features a 2.5″ thick plank top resting on four wide slightly curved legs joined on the bottom by wide shoe feet. Each foot is joined by a single large stretcher. The table exhibits two leaves that are easily inserted and removed by sliding into each end. The hand carved top presents excellent joinery and craftsmanship that showcases the rich walnut wood grain. Monastery tables were originally used as dining tables in monasteries during Medieval times. Depending on the size of the refectory (dining hall), multiple tables could be lined up for the monks to eat while one of the clerics read scripture from an elevated pulpit.
